Dr Sam Irving holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Nottingham (UK) and a MNeurosci. in neuroscience and molecular cell biology from the University of Manchester (UK).

His postdoctoral work includes cochlear implant and tinnitus research, and it is through exposure to the mental health challenges of tinnitus sufferers that his career moved away from research and into the mental health system, with a particular focus on the mental health and wellbeing of young people.

His work with young people over the past 9 years at headspace (Australia) has included leading and contributing to a wide range of national programs, including the articulation of the headspace model; the development and implementation of the headspace Model Integrity Framework for the headspace centre network; significant work to promote improved care and collaboration with Australia's First Nations peoples; and the development of comprehensive clinical training around youth mental health.

He has also led national workforce initiatives around General Practitioners and Peer Workers, and co-designed the headspace Early Career Program for students and graduates working in Social Work, Psychology and Occupational Therapy, providing supported places in headspace services.

Sam hopes that perspectives gained through addressing the complexities of the youth mental health system in Australia, as well as experiences from his own international upbringing, can help IAYMH to achieve better outcomes for young people across the globe.

When not working, Sam is an engaged father of three, and looks after his own mental health by riding his bike and playing music.
